The Fondation pour une Histoire Juive Universelle (FHJU) aims to collect and make available to the public all documents on the history of Jews, Jewish communities, the Jewish fact and Jewish thought from the earliest times, throughout the world.
The FHJU aims to shed light on :

<li>the perpetuation of the Jewish fact over the past 2000 years throughout the world, through individual journeys</li>
<li>the richness of Jewish thought, the diversity of its currents and its contribution to the progress of humanity</li>
<li>the great debates, discussions and controversies that have animated the intellectual and spiritual life of Jewish communities.</li>
</ul>
These documents come from a variety of sources. The focus is on family archives: private documents such as letters, photographs and diaries are compared with administrative records such as contracts, court records and civil status files. Their analysis enables us to reconstruct singular lives, while shedding light on eras and social milieus.
The FHJU also brings together documents from the public sphere: edicts, regulations and statutes governing Jewish life, as well as committed texts: petitions, requests from Jewish communities, letters from politicians and rulers on the issue of emancipation and equal rights. Texts by writers, artists and philosophers testifying to the Jewish condition in a given time and place also enrich the collection.

The Ghetto Fighters' House Archives were established along with the founding of Kibbutz Lohamei Haghetaot (Kibbutz of the Ghetto Fighters&rsquo;). Despite the difficulties, the kibbutz members began collecting official and personal documents and photographs to document the Holocaust period and the communities that were destroyed. The work of collecting and sorting was viewed by the kibbutz members as carrying out the Last Will and Testament of those who perished, and a direct continuation of documentation work done in the ghettos.
The GFH Archives hold various kinds of materials, among them: letters, personal official documents, diaries, testimonies (written, audiotaped, and videotaped), films, photographs, an art collection, and an artifacts collection. The Archives deal with the documentation of three main periods in the history of the Jewish People: between the two World Wars &ndash; youth movements, religious life, community life and culture; the fate of the Jewish people during WWII &ndash; in camps and ghettos, physical and spiritual Jewish resistance; and the Holocaust survivor community in postwar Europe.
The GFH Archives maintain a data base accessible to the public. At present, the Archives are in the midst of a digitization project, working to make the holdings available via the Internet, catalogues and academic conferences. Many of the items are already available in the online archives accessed through the GFH website. Among the holdings are unique collections, including of the poet and playwright Itzhak Katzenelson; renowned educator Janusz Korczak; the Lodz ghetto; the &ldquo;Zionist Coordination&rdquo; for the discovery and recovery of Jewish children in postwar Poland who had been placed with non-Jews in wartime; Adolf-Avraham Berman&rsquo;s collection on underground activity in Warsaw after the ghetto&rsquo;s liquidation; stage director Jonas Turkow&rsquo;s collection on theatre and culture in the Warsaw ghetto; the Zionist pioneering organization HeHalutz; the collection of children&rsquo;s testimonies compiled by Benjamin Tene, an emissary of the HaShomer HaTzair movement in postwar DP camps; Yisrael Kaplan&rsquo;s collected testimonies of Holocaust survivors from Lithuania; a collection of personal materials on Dutch Jewry; photos from the British internment camps in Cyprus for clandestine Jewish immigrants to Mandate Palestine; the Art Collection; the Artifacts Collection, and more.
Thanks to the generous donation made by the Association of Jews from Mlawa in Israel, the Archives have set up a researchers&rsquo; room, in memory of the Jewish community of Mlawa, Poland. The renovation and refurbishment of the room were made possible with the aid of the Claims Conference (Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany). The room&rsquo;s computers are outfitted with a search program enabling direct access to all the archives collections that have been digitized and catalogued.
The Archives are a resource for the GFH Museum&rsquo;s educational programs and its exhibitions. The &ldquo;Yizkor&rdquo; Hall exhibits artifacts from the GFH collection and artworks from the Art Collection. This exhibition is about memory and coping with it, commemorating the Jewish communities that were destroyed and the people who built and lived in them, enabling exposure to these two important collections of the Archives&rsquo; holdings.

The Jewish Records Indexing &ndash; Poland / JewishGen 1929 Polish Business Directory Project provides access to the data for each town in the Directory. The Polish Business Directories of the 1920s and 1930s have thousands of pages of information about people in current and former areas of Poland, including regions now part of the Vilna area of Lithuania, the Grodno area of Belarus, and Volhynia and East Galicia, now parts of the western Ukraine.
These listings not only tell us how our families earned their living but often they are the only accessible source of 20th century information about our relatives.
Entries typically include the name of the business or proprietor, and the address or street name. The directory has an section with a list of Industries/Businesses with translations from English to Polish, French to Polish, German to Polish and Russian to Polish. Within the directory pages, Industries/Businesses are listed in Polish with a French translation, and range from doctor and banker to midwife and stall-operator at the weekly marketplace. Each town listing starts with information about the town, the larger the town, the more comprehensive the description.
Researchers having access to this business directory from other years are encouraged to check them against the data for their towns in the 1929 directory and to provide a list of entries that are not included in the 1929 edition. Data from other years will be identified by the year of publishing of the directory.

Our portal is a presentation of the largest named census of the population of interwar Poland. Among the nearly 1.3 million signatures, almost each of us can find a loved one. The opportunity to learn about a fragment of family history, while taking a broader look at the society of the Second Republic and involving, among others, individuals, teachers, students, representatives of non-governmental organizations, local governments, to jointly tell the story of 100 years of Polish reality, is the main idea of the project. With 1.3 million signatures, this could be as many individual stories allowing us to look into the past to understand the present and be an important lesson for the future. More than a century ago, at the end of the Great War, later called World War I, thanks to the efforts of Ignacy Paderewski, among others, the US not only recognized Polish statehood as a condition for a peaceful order in Europe (the 13th point of President Woodrow Wilson's peace program provided for the rebirth of an independent Polish state), but also provided the Second Republic with material support worth about $200 million. The American humanitarian mission, headed by future U.S. President Herbert Hoover, made a real contribution to Poland's maintenance of its just-regained independence. On the 150th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, the Polish people decided to thank the American people for this assistance. Between April and July 1926, 1,274,936 signatures were collected nationwide for the Declaration of Admiration and Friendship for the United States.

The Internet site &ldquo;Art and Architecture of the Russian Abroad&rdquo; is designed to accumulate in encyclopedic form and disseminate scientific knowledge about the artistic culture of the Russian emigration of the first half of the twentieth century.
The Russian Abroad is understood as a cultural and historical phenomenon that emerged in 1918-1939 as a result of mass emigration of citizens of the Russian Empire after the revolution of 1917. During this period, hundreds of thousands of Russian emigrants found refuge in different countries, preserving the Russian language, customs, spiritual and cultural traditions. For the most part, they were representatives of the middle class, including persons of free professions - figures of literature, art, music and theater. The Russian Abroad also included those who left their homeland before the revolution, as well as those who were forced abroad as a result of the post-revolutionary change of state borders.
The main centers of the Russian Abroad were Paris, Berlin, Prague, Belgrade, New York, Harbin, Shanghai, and there were centers of Russian culture in Italy, Great Britain, Bulgaria, Romania, Finland, Poland, Belgium, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Canada, the Baltic republics, some Latin American countries, and Australia.

This is a former outbuilding near the residential house of Enikas &Scaron;eras, where he had the candle factory &ldquo;&Scaron;vyturys&rdquo;. In another building next to it, in Birutės str. 16A, the story of the candle factory continued ‒ only without E. &Scaron;eras. After his death in 1937 part of his business was taken over by Mau&scaron;a Kacas and the company was renamed &ldquo;Taicas, Judelis ir Ko&rdquo;. M. Kacas moved the candle factory to the adjacent building because it offered a larger space and also established a vegetable oil bottling factory &ldquo;Kokolynas&rdquo;.

Location: The textile factory &ldquo;Klaipėda&rdquo; was sold cheaply in 1939, but the production did not cease even during the Second World War, when the state enterprise &ldquo;Klaipėda Textile Factory No. 1&rdquo; operated at the premises. The &ldquo;Trinyčiai textile factory&rdquo; started operating in the damaged company&rsquo;s premises after the war. In 1993 it became a private equity firm, and later it went bankrupt. The former buildings of the company to the west of the Malūnai pond were levelled to the ground in 2008&ndash;2009. The remnants of the oldest buildings still remain to the north of the pond. Today, only the former administrative building of the factory at Gluosnių str. 12 reminds visitors of the once huge factory.

This period proved to be very fruitful in terms of collecting and accumulating information, actively conducting research. Social processes and phenomena, the study of which had previously required to spend decades, were firsthand for a very short period for the life of the country. Of particular interest is the evolution of the country's military organization from the powerful multimillion-strong Armed Forces of the Soviet Union to the Russian army, which has serious financial, material and technical and social problems. In the course of the work on the book, the authors used the capabilities of the automated data bank of the former Center for Military-Sociological, Psychological and Legal Studies of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (CMSPLS) as a source material, which is a unique repository of information on research conducted 1989-1995. The data sets were subjected to processing, secondary analysis and interpretation. In order to demonstrate the practical importance of research, most of them provide a retrospective review of the conclusions and recommendations that were reflected in the memos and reports. This makes it possible to evaluate from the standpoint of the present day the extent to which this or that study has proved to be a vital and weighty application in the applied plan, whether it caused a proper response from the organs of military and state administration. Some of them have not lost their relevance even at the present time.&nbsp;</div>

&ldquo;Imperial Russian Water Rescue Society&rdquo; - a voluntary mass public organization established in the Russian Empire with the aim of protecting life, health and rescue of people, as well as taking measures to prevent and eliminate the causes of disasters on water bodies. The Russian Navy has always had a rule: &ldquo;Perish yourself, but help your comrade&rdquo;. The foundations of rescue in Russia were laid under Peter the Great. During the severe floods in St. Petersburg in 1709. Peter I personally led the rescue work, showing an example of courage and bravery in saving drowning people. The Tsar's statutes paid much attention to helping people in case of shipwrecks and natural disasters. At the end of the XIX century in the world there was a need to create organizations of professional rescuers, in connection with maritime disasters, in which annually were in distress more than 6.5 thousand large ships, of which more than a thousand drowned. By the beginning of the XX century such organizations, Water Rescue Societies, existed in most countries: England, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Portugal, Sweden.
In Russia, the first water rescue society was the local one in Vyborg, with an extremely limited range of activities. The idea of establishing a number of marine rescue stations in Russia on private funds arose among sailors on the initiative of Captain 1st rank Freygang, who in 1866 collected a small amount of money and proposed to announce a general subscription among sailors. The project of establishment of the rescue society was discussed in a special committee under the chairmanship of Admiral K.N. Posiet from representatives of the Ministries of Maritime and Finance and from stock exchange committees. In 1871 the Charter of the &ldquo;Shipwreck Aid Society&rdquo; was approved. It was placed under the jurisdiction of the Maritime Ministry, under the chairmanship of one of the admirals. The first chairman of the Society and its founder was Admiral Konstantin Nikolaevich Posyet. The central Council of the Society was located in St. Petersburg on Sadovaya Street, 50-b. The three-storied building was built (1893 - 1894 by architect-engineer Peter Stanislavovich Kupinsky) for the main board of the &ldquo;Russian Water Rescue Society&rdquo;. Funds for the construction of the building were collected by subscription throughout Russia. The building housed a chancery, a library, a museum, a meeting hall. In the first floor there was a warehouse where boats and other means of water rescue were stored. [...]

This book was first published in 2010, and today Alexander Khinshtein offers a reissue, corrected and supplemented. According to the author, comparing Brezhnev's &ldquo;era of stagnation&rdquo; and Putin's &ldquo;era of stability&rdquo; is the province of the opposition. Meanwhile, he finds a lot of similarities in the two eras. He argues that the era of stagnation is just a clich&eacute; launched by special propagandists, that the junction of the 1960s and 1970s was truly the golden era of the Soviet Union, and Leonid Brezhnev had every chance to remain in history as one of the most revered rulers: wise, caring and strong. It is not for nothing that all his contemporary ratings are off the charts. Alexander Khinshtein was the first in the country to raise his voice in defense of the legendary General Secretary, daring to show his true image, cleansed of propaganda husks. In his historical investigation, he tries to answer the questions that have recently become more and more frequent in society. The author believes that this time was the best in Soviet history, that stagnation is the flip side of stability and that everything new is the well-forgotten old.

Electronic Library "Molodiezh Rossii" (Youth of Russia) Collections

For 105 years the newspaper of military sailors of the twice Red Banner Baltic Fleet &ldquo;Guardian of the Baltic&rdquo; (formerly &ldquo;Red Baltic Fleet&rdquo;) has been on watch in the Baltic. Born in the formidable years of the Civil War, it stood in one line with sailors, petty officers, officers of the fleet in defense of the western borders of the state.
The first issue of the newspaper was published on March 6, 1919. Its circulation amounted to 18600 copies. The newspaper was printed thanks to the help of Alexei Maximovich Gorky, who was then commissar of the printing house of the newspaper &ldquo;Kopeyka&rdquo;.
In preparation for the first issue, an editorial board was formed, headed by Vladimir Mitrofanovich Orlov.
In 1919 the literary studio of the Baltic Fleet was created. Its organizer and head was Alexei Maximovich Gorky. Since 1920 special pages began to be printed in &ldquo;KBF&rdquo;, which in 1923 received the name &ldquo;Literary Watch&rdquo;. The famous writer Leonid Sobolev started his activity in this association. In the editorial office at different times worked well-known prose writers and poets Vsevolod Azarov, Vasily Lebedev Kumach, Alexei Lebedev cooperated with the publication. In 1922 Vsevolod Vishnevsky first appeared in &ldquo;KBF&rdquo; with a story.
From the first days of the Great Patriotic War the newspaper of the Baltic inhabitants stood in unison with the fleet to defend the Motherland from the hated enemy. On June 22, 1941 &ldquo;Red Baltic Fleet &lsquo; came out with the front line &rsquo;Higher vigilance, ship anti-aircraft gunners!&rdquo;. The Baltians read it already at battle stations, reflecting the raids of fascist aviation.
During these years the journalists of the fleet newspaper not only with a pen, but also with a machine gun smashed the enemy. Under hurricane mortar fire of Germans near Tallinn, Nikolay Danilov, deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper, formed sailor detachments for battles. While carrying out a combat mission on the front line of defense of the left bank of the Neva River, journalist Avksenty Kondratyuk was mortally wounded and died. The correspondent Alexey Vlasov did not return from a combat trip on a submarine. Many journalists and editorial staff died in the Tallinn passage of the Baltic Fleet ships on August 28, 1941. In October 1941, correspondents Vladimir Lebedev and Vladimir Maximov went missing during the evacuation of units from the island of Ezel .
Under twelve reports about the defense of Hanko, printed in the fleet newspaper in August-November 1941, there is a signature: &ldquo;Senior political officer P. Zvonkov. Special correspondent of the newspaper &ldquo;Red Baltic Fleet&rdquo; on Hanko&rdquo;. He died a brave death in an air battle on the airplane &ldquo;MBR-2&rdquo; over the island of Gogland.
On the pages of the "Red Baltic Fleet &rdquo; for the first time was published a historic address of the military council of the KBF to the citizens of Leningrad. It said: &ldquo;We make an unbreakable sacred oath, as long as the heart beats, as long as the eyes see, as long as the hands hold weapons - no fascist scum in the city!&rdquo;
Even during the battles for Tallinn the news spread about the feat of a Red Fleetman, who was brutally tortured by the fascists, but did not give away the military secret. Correspondents of the newspaper together with representatives of the political department of the fleet established that this hero was an electrician from the leader &ldquo;Minsk&rdquo; Evgeny Nikonov. The newspaper told in detail about his feat. In 1957 the warrior was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Continuing this necessary work to immortalize the deeds of the dead, the journalists of &ldquo;Guardian of the Baltic&rdquo; conducted a great search for the Baltic heroes who defended the Moonsund archipelago in 1941, restored the events of the Merekyla landing, found and published materials about the life and deeds of all Baltic sailors, enrolled forever in the lists of ships and units of the Baltic Sea Fleet.
The archives of the editorial office were twice lost in the fire of war. History has preserved few documents about the employees of the "Red Baltic Fleet &rdquo; of the war years. But even they testify that these people selflessly served the Motherland, sparing no effort and their lives, fighting the hated enemy. They fulfilled the duty of journalists and warriors to the end.
On June 15, 1946 by the decision of the political department of the NK Navy, the newspaper &ldquo;Red Baltic Fleet &lsquo; was renamed &rsquo;Red Baltiets&rdquo;, and from August 9, 1947 it was called &ldquo;On Watch&rdquo;. Then in Baltiysk the newspaper &ldquo;Guardian of Baltics&rdquo; was launched, which became the successor of the glorious traditions of the previous editions.
The present generation of journalists of the oldest navy newspaper of Russia is rightfully proud of the fact that on March 14, 1969 the newspaper "Guardian of Baltic &rdquo; was awarded the Order of the Red Star for great merits in mobilization of military sailors to defend the Motherland during the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War, fruitful work on education of the fleet personnel.
In recent decades, the newspaper together with the fleet has gone through a difficult stage of reforming. Today its journalists still go out to sea on Baltic Fleet ships, participate in maneuvers and exercises at training grounds.
The newspaper focuses on the issues of combat training of units and ships of the Baltic Fleet, the most urgent topics of military education. The main efforts are aimed at providing information support for the activities of the Baltic Fleet forces and troops, ensuring the educational process with all categories of personnel, strengthening the positive image of the fleet in the region where the forces are based and troops are stationed.
Since 2018, the editorial staff of the newspaper is organizationally part of the staff of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Editorial and Publishing Center &lsquo;Krasnaya Zvezda&rsquo; of the Ministry of Defense of Russia. "Guardian of the Baltics &rdquo; switched to a new issue format - D-2 (8 pages in full color). More than a quarter of a century has passed since the organization of the first ethnographic expeditions to the Jewish localities of Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States, undertaken by specialists and students of the St. Petersburg Jewish University (now <a href="http://pijs.ru">St. Petersburg Institute of Judaic Studies</a>).
At that time, in the late 1980s, a group of Jewish youth formed and became interested in the culture of their people. They soon realized that the main centers of Jewish civilization for the last five centuries were not in St. Petersburg, Moscow or Kiev, but were scattered in small Jewish villages in Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States - <a href="https://ru.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A8%D1%82%D0%B5%D1%82%D0%BB">shtetls</a>. Expeditions began, and their participants enthusiastically researched Jewish localities, collecting materials, interviewing, documenting and photographing. Collected interviews and photographs, ancient prayer books and scrolls, ritual Jewish objects and many other finds made during more than forty expeditions are now the pearl of the archival collection of the St. Petersburg Institute of Jewish Studies. Preserving such materials is the most important task of the Jewish community today.
However, no less significant is the task of disseminating Jewish knowledge - the need to familiarize the widest range of people with the invaluable heritage of the Ashkenazi world. It is this task that we, the initiative group, set for ourselves, implementing the project &ldquo;Digital Archive of Jewish Localities&rdquo; with the support of the Institute of Jewish Studies and the <a href="http://www.ort.spb.ru">ORT-SPb Center</a>, as well as <a href="http://www.ujafedny.org">UJA-Federation of New York</a> within the framework of <a href="http://www.cafrussia.ru/">CAF Russia's</a> charitable program <a href="http://www.cafrussia.ru/">&ldquo;Jewish Communities&rdquo;</a>.
In front of you is a website with unique documents and photographs collected during the expeditions from 1991 to 1997. This is only a part of the large-scale archive of materials stored in the FDI funds. Gradually we will post here materials on genealogy, ethnography, history and anthropology of the Jewish population of Soviet Russia, as well as memoirs of the shtetl of the XX century.
The site &ldquo;Digital Archive of Jewish Localities&rdquo; has a search function and allows you to search for any information on the entire volume of materials posted here. Furthermore, there are detailed descriptions of the cities of Bursa, Dorpat (Tartu), Istanbul, Novgorod, Riga and Saint Petersburg.
As part of the EU project ‟Europeana Travel&rdquo;, selected travel reports from the collection of the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies were first digitized by the Regensburg University Library and then subjected to OCR processing. Consequently, the works can not only be read online, but can also be searched for keywords. In addition, individual pages or the entire work (as an e-book) can be downloaded in PDF format (Mac users need an additional plug-in).

At the end of the 1990s, a team of journalists, historians and lovers of Jewish history, with the support of the Fondation Jacques et Jacqueline L&eacute;vy-Willard, set about writing a cultural guide that would lead the curious traveller to discover an unknown Europe. Le Guide Culturel des Juifs d'Europe was published in 2002 by Editions du Seuil. In 2016, this work, revised and expanded, was reborn in the form of this website thanks to the work of Laura Schwartz, editor-in-chief of the site from 2016 to 2019. Steve Krief is the current editor-in-chief, as of 2019. Some places are famous and unmissable - such as the Venice ghetto or Prague's old Jewish quarter - but the treasures of a Jewish culture that has marked and still marks Europe are absent from the usual websites. Now you can take a virtual tour of the synagogues of Provence or the backstreets of small towns in Romania or the Ukraine, rediscover the Jewish life of yesteryear in Sarajevo, Istanbul or Sofia, and find out that there is often a museum, a temple, a cemetery, a souvenir or an anecdote just around the corner. Migration is an everyday and ubiquitous phenomenon for us today. In recent decades, many people from the countries of the South Caucasus have migrated to Europe and other places across the globe. At the beginning of the 19th century, the situation was reversed: Europeans arrived from the west to live and work in the South Caucasus. At this time, the borders of the Russian Empire were extended over the Caucasian foothills through conquests. Already in the 18th century, Catherine the Great (1729&ndash;1796) had initiated not only scientific exploration of these remote regions but also the settlement of foreigners in the newly conquered territories. The so-called Invitation Manifestos of 1762&ndash; 64, outlining the rights and duties of the new settlers, laid the legal framework for future settlement. The project&nbsp;<a href="https://uamoderna.com/in-the-thunderstorm-of-war/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">&ldquo;In the Thunderstorm of War&rdquo;</a>&nbsp;is an online collection of interviews with professional historians, anthropologists, and ethnologists who found themselves at the centre of current historical events. In the new reality, these people put on military uniforms or joined the ranks of volunteers, finding themselves under occupation, and gaining experience of survival under enemy fire. Interviews are available in English, French, and German.
The academic website&nbsp;<a href="https://uamoderna.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ukraina Moderna</a>&nbsp;has been publishing a new section titled &ldquo;In the Thunderstorm of War&rdquo; since the beginning of Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion against Ukraine. The section contains the interviews with professional historians, anthropologists, and ethnologists who found themselves at the centre of current historical events. In the new reality, these people put on military uniforms or joined the ranks of volunteers, finding themselves under occupation, and gaining experience of survival under enemy fire.
In 2024, a new stage of the project began. The &ldquo;Ukraina Moderna&rdquo; website, in cooperation with the NGO &ldquo;The Centre for Applied Anthropology&rdquo;, created an online collection which contains translations of the interviews into English, French, and German. One of the aims of the project is to present the collection at Western Universities.&nbsp;This project is a part of the Lysiak-Rudnytsky Ukrainian Studies Programme held by the Ukrainian Institute and Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation, with the financial support of the International Renaissance Foundation.
The relevance of the project lies in the fact that the recent events of the Russian-Ukrainian war are recorded and reflected in the memoirs of scholars who rely on their own experiences as direct participants in the events and on their professional backgrounds. This symbiosis contributes to the creation of new meanings and a deeper understanding of the genesis and course of the Russian-Ukrainian war, as well as the role of individuals in it. From the perspective of experts and participants in the events, the characters in the section attempt to comprehend the staggering tears in the social fabric caused by the war, and they lay the first bricks in the future thorough study of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
This project seeks to give Ukrainian academics a voice in a situation where their professional opportunities are limited by the war. It aims to make their unique experiences and reflections visible beyond the borders of Ukraine. The project seeks to weave and embed the individual experiences of Ukrainian scholars into the overall Ukrainian narrative of war tragedy, resistance, and resilience.
The project documents the stunning twists of fate that turned humanities scholars into real heroes.
The project will tell the story of
&ndash; A scientist whose house was destroyed by the Russians. He joined the army despite the fact that he was not eligible for conscription. He is currently fighting in the hottest areas. At home, his three children and his wife, who has become an active volunteer, are waiting for him.
&ndash; A professor who spent 46 days in the basement of a Mariupol building under constant bombardment.
&ndash; A young folklorist who was forced to flee from Irpin and from the bombings, and currently collects money for off-road vehicles for military personnel and drives them from abroad to the front line herself, despite the fact that she only learned how to drive just before the full-scale invasion.
&ndash; A professor who was a member of the anti-terrorist operation since 2014, who became a volunteer for the second time, and who was part of the unit that liberated Kherson.
The stories of many other scientists who were forced to try on unusual roles in extreme conditions are recorded here too.
All of these people are heroes because they survived in extremely difficult conditions and continue to work for the Victory of Ukraine. These people have spent their entire lives collecting and researching the stories of people of the past. Now their own experiences can become one of the sources for writing the history of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Their vision of current events is also invaluable, as it can help the general public, especially abroad, to better understand the nature and course of the war in which Ukrainians are fighting for the right to live.

The Digital Library brings together not only the mainly periodical resources of the old DiFMOE platform, but also the diverse content of the European Capital of Culture projects Cassovia Digitalis, Riga Digitalis, Pilsna Digitalis and Wratislavia Digitalis, where they can be accessed both in their entirety and separately as collections. The catalog contains 4018 annotations to photographic documents transferred by the Federal Archives of Germany in 1997 and 2008. Most of them are copies of photographic documents stored in the archives before the beginning of the German-Soviet war, which reflect political, social, cultural and economic life of Ukraine. A separate group consists of photographic documents by German photographers taken in 1942-1943 in Kyiv, Minsk (BSSR), and Smolensk (RSFSR).

An important component of the film documentary complex of the Pshenychnyi Central State Cinema, Photo and Sound Archive of Ukraine is the film documents from the collection of Ukrainian choreographer and film producer V. The photos published here illustrate Jewish life in Hungary, or the photographers were Jews once living in Hungary as well. It is evident, that the larger, assimilated part of Hungarian Jews is incomprehensible on photos, as they are not different from non-Jewish people. Some people identify themselves as Jewish in a cultural sense: they have knowledge of their Jewish origin or have an increased interest concerning Jewish contents. They are attached to Judaism the same way as religious Jews, but with an ever-changing Jewish identity.</div>
<div class="md:w-1/2 lg:w-1/2 xl:w-1/2 text-left">Many of them were converted to Christianity in the 20th century, and many of them turned to Communism and atheism following the persecution, or even denied their Jewish origin. Personal choices are, however often ignored by society, which has a memory for generations. The starting point was the fact that Jewish identity is characterized by a dynamic change within a lifetime or among generations. This website aims to show all the photos that have a connection to Judaism, either by their subjects or by the photographer. The purpose is the documentation of Jewish-Hungarian coexistence.</div>

20th Century Hungary Jewish Photo Archive

In 1944, hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews had to display the yellow star, then move to ghettos or yellow-star houses. Finally, they were collected deported - most of them to a certain death.
Hardly any photos of these very public events survived. This is the case even though photography was a widespread middle-class hobby at the time. Many people owned cameras and took pictures even during the wartime years. Deportations were either not photographed or if they were, the photos were hidden or destroyed later - we don&rsquo;t know. One thing is sure: very few photos survive to illustrate these events and what&rsquo;s worse, the availability of these photos is usually limited.
The mission of the new holocaust photo website is to find and collect as many Hungarian Holocaust-related photos as possible, then identify and display original sources and improve legal accessibility. We upload the well-known as well as the unpublished photos constantly, to make them available here. We hope that our homepage will promote the appearance of Holocaust photography with correct information in the press and in historical works, in real historical context and in good quality.
We consider Holocaust photos the images thar show either anti-Jewish discrimination, or the effects of Anti-semitic legislation. Examples are displays of the yellow star, ghettoization, deportation, photos of forced-labor battalions, concentration camps or murders at other places.
Our criteria are simple: anything is a Holocaust photo if it represents anti-Jewish discrimination and was taken within the historical borders of Hungary (or if taken abroad of Hungarian Jews) between 1938 and 1948.
Holokausztfoto.hu is a voluntary private initiative. We are seeking cooperation with institutional collections and private parties in order to add new photos to our collection. Photos, support and ideas are welcome. Feel free to get in touch with us and upload your photos.

We write for a wide range of readers, including researchers, theatre practitioners, students, teachers, translators, and the general public.

For centuries, Yiddish theatre was one of the most significant cultural phenomena in the Jewish world. Yiddish was the native language of almost all of eastern European Jewry. Yiddish plays addressed all of the major issues facing modern Jewry, including the tension between tradition and modernization, antisemitism, religious reforms, radical politics, the Holocaust, and debates over the creation of a Jewish state. The Yiddish theatre is thus one of the most powerful tools we have for understanding modern Jewish history.

It was established in 2001 and currently works as a library consortium with 15 members. The search interface is available in English and the database can be searched in several different ways. Individual journal issues can also be browsed and if they are available online in a full-text database then the title of the journal will be marked as a hyperlink to the source. The retrospective processing of journals is in the hands of each library, as a result of which such issues are available only for some periodicals.
